HOUSE MOVERS & SHAKERS | EMMET MCNAMEE

Posted

We’re lucky to have so many amazing staff and Emmet McNamee is just one of them. His official role is Head of Maintenance but his real passion is joinery and all things wood – recycled, upcycled, reclaimed, even driftwood!!! Sacha Cahill (our in-house creative) gets to understand the man himself:

SC: You are our Head of Maintenance so how come we are writing about wood?

EmN: I love the maintenance role but given the nature of this old building and our passion to restore it, half of my workload is project based and invariably this means creating + making pieces for specific spaces, with a certain look and I use wood primarily. I’m a wood nerd!!

SC: What other designing and building do you do?

EmN: Mostly it’s just furniture but as I’m in charge of a myriad of teams (builders, plumbers, roofers, electricians, specialist makers), I tend to get involved in both design and build to speed up the projects….I have an impatient boss!!

SC: If you had an unlimited budget, what would you build?

EmN: Something for myself and my wife, probably? It would also mean that I’ve hit the jackpot as I actually had the time to build something just for me….sadly, not the case

SC: What do you do when you’re not busy wood shopping + chopping?

EmN: Sleep/Football/Golf (badly)/Getting the Nursey ready (ahead of our first baby due in Feb)

SC: What’s the next big project you are working on?

EmN: Our new kitchen is arriving from Switzerland shortly (custom made, don’t you know) so I’m busy getting everything ready for this plus planning our next 5 star room upgrade. The drawings are beautiful so I have to execute this into reality (no pressure then!!)

SC: You use a lot of recycled and reclaimed materials from all around the city – What’s the best thing you’ve found that someone ‘chucked-out’?

EmN: I love free stuff and old joinery that people have discarded. Each piece has a story and in the end it gets installed here to keep the story alive….my current favourite is reclaimed boards from an old mill that I’m looking to lay down (I just don’t quite know where yet)

SC: How do you protect your beard from all the wood dust?

EmN: I don’t, can’t you tell? I have embraced it.
